Let the voters decide.

 Make your voice heard.

 Demand government transparency.

Frederick voters are discovering that our Mayor and Aldermen approved non-citizen voting and made other significant changes to our form of government without asking us. They say we had an opportunity to speak up.

How is that? Our notification was an announcement on the City website where no one looks. That is not acceptable. Join us and share the message to demand a change. SIGN THE ONLINE PETITION BELOW.

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD! JOIN US AT THE NEXT MAYOR AND BOARD MEETING. CITY HALL, NOVEMBER 21ST, 2024, AT 7 PM

A MAJORITY OF CITY VOTERS DO NOT KNOW THAT…

On September 19th, 2024, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen changed our form of government and approved non-citizen voting in City elections. See the Amendment on Noncitizen Voting.

This means that a non-citizen can also run for Mayor or City Council (new name of Aldermen), but we say City voters should decide and not just the Mayor and Board.

DEMAND GOVERNMENT TRANSPARENCY!

Mayor Michael O’Connor says he represents us, but if he did, he would have notified the nearly 60,000 City voters. He did not.

Alderman Katie Nash and the other Aldermen say they represent us, but if that were true, they would have asked City voters to decide on the 2025 ballot. They did not.

Instead, our elected officials approved non-citizen voting and 15 more significant changes to the City Charter without asking City voters. See the news here.

The Origin of the Petition:

Immediately after non-citizen voting was approved, a former Alderman began an official petition campaign to overturn the Mayor and Board decision. Given just 40 days to learn the rules, pass legal sufficiency, and collect 15,000 signatures from voters, it was an enormous task.

City Voters Join the Cause:

A handful of volunteers joined the cause and worked tirelessly to gather signatures. Progress was slow because most voters did not know non-citizen voting was approved and others did not believe it was true. Early on, volunteers gained an average of 5 signatures per hour. At that rate, we needed 75 volunteer hours per day, or just over 9 full-time positions, to reach the 15,000 signature goal.

The Result and Next Steps:

We did our best under challenging circumstances and fell short. The signed petitions were submitted to the Frederick City attorney, so they are now a part of the official City record. That is good, but most City voters still do not realize non-citizen voting was approved.

OUR EFFORT IS NOT OVER. The majority of City voters who hear about non-citizen voting agree with us. We will continue to exhaust all avenues possible to demand accountability and stop non-citizen voting in City elections. Spread the word, and add your name to the new online petition below.
